The New Road to Serfdom: A Letter of Warning to America by Daniel Hannan is a plea to those in America who have become blase about their transcendent political inheritance.  In The New Road to Serfdom, Hannan points out why America is a great nation and that those that are pushing for America to follow the European example are pushing American further from its founding ideals.

The first few chapters of The New Road to Serfdom lay out what makes America different from other countries and how successful the American democracy based on Jeffersonian principle has become.

The next few chapters compare the United States to the current situation in Britain and the European Union and then shifts into examples of America’s retreat from Federalism.

The New Road to Serfdom then wraps up with reasons why the United States should not copy the European example, specific examples of what not to emulate, and America’s standing in the world.

The book ends with a plea for Americans to:

• Honor the genius of your founders
• Respect the most sublime constitution devised by human intelligence
• Keep faith with the design that has made you independent
• Preserve the freedom of the nation to which, by good fortune and God’s grace, you are privileged to belong.

The book was an interesting read that is very effective at pointing out the reasons for America’s greatness and why following the European example would be a huge mistake. 

I believe the book would have been even more persuasive argument with more in-depth examples of why European political and social model are ineffective. 

Overall, I highly recommend  The New Road to Serfdom: A Letter of Warning to America by Daniel Hannan as a must read for those seeking to understand why America should avoid following the European examples of bigger government and less personal freedom.

Apparently the Palin book tour is quite popular.  At a recent event in Michigan drew over 1,500 people in freezing weather to meet Sarah Palin at a local Barnes and Noble.

If you constantly find yourself in political discussions where somebody throws out such gems as “the second amendment only allows you to have a gun if you are in a militia”, “the general welfare clause of the constitution established the welfare system”, “capitalism caused the recent financial crisis”, this book is for you.

The book is a quick read and has an interesting format.  Each chapter presents a political hot button topic important to conservatives and liberals alike.  Each chapter is further divided into arguments from “idiots” in red along with a fact based response from Glenn Beck.

The book covers many topics such as Capitalism, Gun Rights, Education, Illegal Immigration, the Nanny State, Universal Health Care, and a thoughtful walk through the constitution.

After reading Arguing with Idiots, you will be armed with the facts to support you in any argument on many of today’s hot button political topics.

Although every chapter is a great read, the Capitalism, gun rights, and education chapters are some of the best.

The Capitalism chapter focuses on defending Capitalism and showing great examples of where government intervention has caused more problems than it has fixed.  From Amtrak to Fannie and Freddy, Glenn Beck shows how the government has failed at running businesses that are profitable.  Worse yet, the government run entities cost tax payers when they lose money.

For example, the Amtrak, has many lines that lose money every year.  However, because of politics, the lines are kept open and running despite losing money on every single passenger.

The gun rights chapter of Arguing with Idiots, Glenn Beck examines what the writers of the Constitution meant, often in their own words, when creating the second amendment.  This chapter also does a great job of showing how disarming law abiding citizens leads to greater gun violence.  This runs contrary to the “idiots argument” of less guns means less violence.

The education chapter does a great job of showing how the federal government and often the states have ruined our education system.  In this chapter, Glenn Beck shows that pouring more money into the bloated corrupt system doesn’t lead to better education.  For example, NY state spends the most per student and Utah spends the least.  However, the average test scores are almost identical.

If you constantly find yourself arguing with idiots who lean to the left, this book is full of facts that will enable you to present a good case.

The only real drawback of the book is that the majority of the citations are in the back of the book without clear references to each citation.  However, this minor flaw does not take away from the overall usefulness of the book.

Overall, Conservative Patriot HQ highly recommends the newest book by Glenn Beck.
